History

In 2001, with a new pastor and an influx of younger parishioners, the time seemed right to introduce a summer vacation bible school into parish life.
Parishioner Jennie Statczar received the support of Father Watson to pursue this program with the hope of adding a Catholic flavor to vacation bible school.  Her energy, as the first director, was the needed force that compelled other parishioners to join these efforts.  A handful of parishioners assembled to start planning St. Andrew’s version of a vacation bible school.

The name for the St. Andrew Vacation Bible School was coined by Father Watson, as he used the word “SACRED” to be an acronym for St. Andrew Children’s Recreation Education Days.  The first SACRED event took place in June 2001.

Over the course of the first four years, the days and the hours of operation fluctuated slightly settling on a summer program that occurs for four consecutive weekdays in June.  Decoration of classrooms to coincide with the year’s theme created quiet havens for each class’s small group discussion and prayer, then by rotating to the learning centers for; outdoor recreation, craft-making, praying, and singing, students have equally enjoyed watching live skits performed by the volunteer Teen Helpers.  SACRED’S environment encourages all participants to pray together, play together and get to know one another as children of God.

In a very short period of time, SACRED developed a dedicated following of attendees of all ages.  As is the natural progression at SACRED, the oldest students graduate after sixth grade and become Teen Helpers the following year.  Equally dedicated are the volunteer adult teachers, some of which have taught since the school’s inception.

These faith-centered teachers and helpers have assisted students through weeklong activities, which showcased various themes.   One year the students dedicated themselves to learn about Mary through a devote theme.  While more adventurous themes have treated students to camping excursions, travels to far away countries or safari treks to Africa. Whatever the parallel, Jesus is the focus of the week and students have continued to learn more every year in fun and adventurous ways.
