History

In 1957, Father Nugent and Dr. Mary Bradbury offered religious education to 25 parish children who attended local public schools.  Joan Taylor continued the program until 1968.  During her volunteer tenure, the Diocese of Columbus supplied the books and direction for the program. Ann O’Neill led the program from 1969 to 1980.

Late in this decade, the parish experienced their first change of pastor.  In 1969, Fr. Donald C. Schulz became the second pastor of St. Andrew Parish, which had grown to include 1200 parish families.

Father Schulz continued parish support for the CCD program for public school students with funding for books, teacher training, field trips, and small salaries.  Salesian students were recruited from the Josephinum to help assist the directors.  Their involvement increased the fullness of the program so much so that attendance at their ordinations became part of the curriculum.

Fifty or more volunteers, as well as four Sisters of St. Joseph, taught CCD on Wednesday afternoons at 4 PM in the school.  The halls brimmed with students busy with sacramental preparation, scripture study, service projects, prayer, Passover meals, special liturgies, and May crownings.  On Sunday evenings, the Junior High students prepared for Confirmation, while the Senior High students met in parishioners’ homes.

By 1970 the student attendance had grown to 1000 students, encompassing grades 1 through 12.   Jan Walsh was responsible for the Junior High and Dee Murphy directed the Senior High.  Beginning in 1980, Ann O’Neill directed the Elementary grades until Ann Brown’s arrival in 1987.

This exciting time in the history of CCD also included visits to the convent of the Sisters of Carmel, retreats at the Josephinum and to St. Therese, guitar masses with Paul McGree playing while the Salesians assisted on the altar.  The administration and teaching staff developed a sense of loyalty to one another and to the children.

Throughout the next fourteen years Ann continued the program with the assistance of Helene Fullam and Sally Shough.  Tina Butler began working with Ann in 2000 prior to becoming the Director of Religious Education for grades 1-5 while Maria LaPierre was the DRE for grades 6,7, & 8.  In July 2002, Suzie Emsweller was hired as DRE and Kris Pellissier became the Director for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
