Fish Dinners

On Fridays during the season of Lent, fish dinners are prepared and served in the Msgr. Nugent Parish Hall at an affordable price.  This year’s menu will feature deep fried ocean perch and baked cod, green beans, salad/slaw and dinner roll.  Pizza and macaroni ‘n cheese is also offered.  A network of volunteers is needed to make this a successful event.  For information, contact the Parish Office, 451-4290.

History

The Lenten Fish Fry Dinner Committee was formed at St. Andrew Parish in the winter of 1997.  Eight very involved mothers at St. Andrew School decided to organize the Fish Fry dinners in order to raise money for our new church and parish hall, which were under construction at the time.

In less than three months, with the help of Monsignor Grimes who agreed to give these ladies a “start – up fund,” they were able to serve the first Lenten Fish Fry Dinners.  A propane fryer was rented for the month and was set up in the parking lot outside of the music room hallway entrance to the school.  Dinner was served through the cafeteria lunch line with seating in the cafeteria proper.          The success of the early fish fry dinners was unexpected.  The crowd’s excitement and friendliness on these evenings provided a community-building atmosphere.  It was common to see a line of soon-to-be diners wind down the lower level hallway as far down as room 109.  Patiently waiting families were treated to sales of ice-cold water and beer from coolers on wheels toted by the supportive husbands of the chairpersons.

More than 400 dinners were served that first evening with the help of countless friends who volunteered.  The original committee was comprised of Katie Alu, Sheila Applegate, Mindy Farwick, Kathy Gill, Marla Koehler, Karen Lombardi, Nancy McEwan and Patti Passen.  These ladies, their husbands, family members and friends continued these dinners through the Lenten season of 2003.  In 2003, parishioner and volunteer, Jim Dougherty, took over the organizing of this event, which is now held in the Monsignor Nugent Parish Hall.
