“Come, let us ring out our joy to the Lord!” So proclaims the opening words of Psalm 95. While there are many ways we can “ring out our joy” in our daily lives, here at St. Andrew we would like to offer an opportunity to “ring out” in a very literal sense. As our parish music program continues to grow, we are looking to add handbells as yet another means for parishioners to participate in the music of our sacred liturgies.
The art of handbell ringing has a long history. The bells were originally used as a practical (and quieter) way to rehearse music that would eventually be played by the large steeple bells of churches and carillon towers. In time, handbells came to be recognized as beautiful instruments in their own right, and in recent centuries have found a home in churches of many denominations.
On Tuesday, Dec. 3, we participated in the #iGiveCatholic national day of giving to kick off this fundraising effort for a set of 37 Malmark handbells called the “Give-a-Bell” program. For a single donation of $400, donors could receive a personalized inscription inside the handle of one of the bells. A donation of $200 allowed donors to share an inscription. Through this special day of giving, we raised $14,090!
Since this national day of giving, we continued to raise money for this musical initiative and ultimately reached $16,690, enough to purchase a three-octave set of handbells AND choir chimes.
Many thanks to all who participated in this giving endeavor both through #iGiveCatholic and in the days that followed.
We hope to offer opportunities for a variety of parishioners, young and old alike, to become a part of a bell choir. The bells will not be played every week, but hopefully, in time they can be played at various parish Masses. With your participation and generosity, we will indeed “ring out our joy to the Lord” in a new way.
